Custom itemtypes are pre-formatted items. You, as the developer of the site, define a custom-itemtype. Other admin-users can then make or edit items of that itemtype. This is great because:
- you can format an item
example: 1 image width=50px right of the text with a link underneath class="readmore"
- you can add fields to an item
a normal item only has 1 editor, now you can use as many fields as you like.
- you can stop administrators breaking the layout
for example by restricting the maximum size of an uploaded image.
- you can use all the content-plugins in Joomla in any number of editors
- fields are instantly searchable (optional per field)
- 'read more' link optional
- template manager with optional different templates for categoryblog-view and full-view.
